Who is the best professor you’ve had at KCC and why?
Austin Ellison
Age: 21
Hometown: Honolulu
Major: Business
“Kathryn Nokwan. She doesn’t teach here anymore. She was an accounting teacher, and I felt like I could really learn from her, she would care, like, she’d let us use study guides for her tests. Like, if we didn’t do well [in a test], she’d let us retake it. But before so, she would, like, make sure we went over everything.”
Shaundee Ngirausui
Age: 19
Hometown: Makiki
Major: Marine Biology
“Donovan Preza, Hawaiian Studies. I’d say he knows how to … it’s not, it’s not like a lecture, more like everybody learns with each other, and he’s like, part of the students. It’s a[n] easy learning environment.”
Eli Kallies
Age: 19
Hometown: Wisconsin
Major: Culinary
“I probably have to go with … my favorite professor so far is probably Professor Shuzo [Uemoto]. He teaches Photography [101]. He’s a nice professor because he is a really down-to-earth person, where you can connect with, so, when he’s teaching you something, you feel like you actually get involved with what he’s saying, and that’s what I really love about [his class].”
Sandy Johnson
Age: 61

Major: Auditing ENG 273 – no major declared
“I don’t know if I’m a good person to ask, because I’ve only had one professor. But, it’s Beau Ewan, and he’s great. Why? He’s … see … he does a really good job at describing what we’re going do, and giving examples, and … it’s, you know, entertaining and thoughtful. All the while I feel like I am learning a lot.”
Tey Kroem
Age: 34
Hometown: Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Major: Undeclared
“Oh, you know what? This time is my second semester, but I still don’t know really well. Right now, I take only English, because the first goal that I want, I want to speak proper English, and then, after then, my English is already fluent, and I can think about what subjects that I want to do. … Mrs. K, she is really, really awesome. [Her first name is] Yumiko Kanaoka [ESOL 98]. We call her Mrs. K. She is really … explained it clearly, and really helpful. This is the second semester that I took [classes with] Mrs. K.”
