Hoʻo Kapule is a first-year student at KCC who is majoring in Liberal Arts.

“I know my sister came here,” said the 18-year-old. “I was going to go to the mainland but I changed my mind so I just came over here. UH was also hard to figure out and my sister said I might as well go to KCC because tuition is cheaper anyway.”

Her future plans entail majoring in business to help her dad who wants to own his own trucking business.

“He helps to fix the roads and whatnot so he wants to own a business where he can haul the materials back and forth,” said Kapule. “My cousin is also a business student at HPU so it’s cool to see what that could be like.”

Kapule also works a part-time job at Sea Life Park in Waimānalo where she grew up. Despite working a small number of hours each week, Kapule said that the pay is great compared to other places and makes $19 an hour.

“The good thing about it is that I used to be really quiet,” said Kapule. “I used to not want to talk to people, but now I’m more open with the guests.”

Outside of school, she enjoys playing softball, surfing with her cousin, and listening to reggae music. Kapule often surfs at Waikīkī Beach and is relatively new to the sport.

“My cousin and I watch each other and see what made someone fall,” said the 18-year-old. “That way we know, ʻOh that made you fall so I’m not going to do that.”
