Desiree Manayan

Desiree Manayan is a second-year student at KCC whose major is in nursing. She commutes to campus by bus from Kalihi and is so far, finishing up her pre-requisites for the  nursing program. Eventually Manayan hopes to one day be a registered nurse, specifically specializing in pediatrics.

Her favorite class here at KCC is Creative Writing, which she took with Mrs. Harada. What she says she likes about it the most is how she would write multiple drafts to perfect the final pieces pieces, which would in turn help Manayan work out her story in the end.

Manayan is also an avid reader. She will read whatever catches her interest, but mostly she will check in the Young Adult section of the library.

Xavier Herrera

Xavier Herrera is from Kapolei, Oʻahu and is in his first semester at KCC with a major in physics. What interests Herrera most about physics is how abstract it is and that nothing is congruent. He originally received an Associate’s degree in Physics but now, at the age of 27, he works behind a cubicle as a Network Engineer at Ford Island. Herrera moved to Oʻahu at the age of 13 in 2003 when his father was stationed to work here in the military. Being part Mexican and Cuban, he says that the quality he likes most about Hawaiʻi is how it’s so welcoming here and how the people aren’t prejudice of race as they are in the mainland.

Geneva Costales is a fourth-year student majoring in Family Resources. The 24-year-old recalled times when her aunt would tell her that she should attend KCC when she was older, however, Costales was considering to start off at UH Mānoa. Her plans changed when her parents didn't approve of her wanting to become a high school counselor, telling her that she would have to pay for college on her own, which led to her decision of attending KCC which she said is more realistic for those who aren't as financially stable. Costales said that her teachers have been, and are, her biggest influences, some even portraying a parental figure to her. Choosing to attend KCC is what she said was a good decision that has given her experiences that have positively impacted her life. Serving as a Hoʻokele Peer Mentor since Spring 2012, Costales said that choosing to become one has helped her to boost her confidence, as well as helping her to improve her leadership skills. "The one thing I like about KCC is that there really is a sense of community, and you can feel that and see that all around you," Costales said.
